Finding Purpose in a Job You Don't Love: Leaning on God

Have you ever found yourself in a job that just doesn’t resonate with you? A position where you struggle to see the purpose or feel a sense of fulfillment? That’s where I am right now. But through this experience, I’m learning to lean on God, and I want to share how this shift in perspective is transforming my work life.

As Christians, we are called to a higher purpose. Our ultimate goal should be to please God, not just our coworkers or our boss. Colossians 3:23-24 (NIV) reminds us, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” This scripture encourages us to view our work as a service to God, which can bring new meaning to our daily tasks.

Some of my best days at work are when I can sit at my desk, plugged into my worship music. I put on my headphones and immerse myself in the melodies that uplift my spirit. If I’m not listening to worship music, I’m tuning into a sermon. You’d be amazed at how quickly time flies when you’re focused on God.

I start my mornings with prayer, seeking God’s guidance and strength. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV) encourages us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” I talk to Him in the car on my way to work and throughout the day, silently inviting Him into my thoughts and actions. When I shift my focus to Him, the annoyances of the job—like difficult coworkers or a demanding boss—don’t irritate me as much. It’s incredible how a little time with God can change your perspective.

I remind myself to be grateful. I prayed for a job in my field of study, and God blessed me with it. Before this, I was in a position that left me feeling miserable, longing for a role that aligned with my education. Now that I have it, I realize that even though it’s a step in the right direction, it still doesn’t bring me the satisfaction I crave.

I believe God is teaching me a valuable lesson: it’s not just about the job itself, but about working in my God-given purpose. Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) reassures us, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” I feel called to evangelize and engage in missions, and I know that any job I take will feel unfulfilling if it doesn’t align with that calling.

Yet, I strive to remain grateful and to please God in my current role. I’m learning to be content and to focus on Him, and I can see how this mindset is helping me navigate the challenges of my workday. Consistency is key, and I’m working on making this a daily practice.

God is always there, guiding me through those long workdays. So, if you find yourself in a job that feels like a dead end or one that doesn’t align with your passions, I encourage you to lean on God. Think of Him as your ultimate boss. If it’s not His will for you to be in that position, I believe that if you remain obedient and faithful, He will open new doors for you.

In the meantime, let’s focus on pleasing Him in our work, finding joy in the little moments, and trusting that He has a plan for us—even in the most unexpected places. As Proverbs 16:3 (NIV) says, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Let’s commit our work to Him and watch how He transforms our experiences.

Now, I’d love to hear from you!
