When your time on earth is done, how will others remember you? This question is not just about legacy—it’s about the intentionality with which we live each day. For Christians, the answer lies in reflecting Christ’s love and living with a purpose that glorifies Him.

In late 2024, the tragic attack at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, shook the local community and the broader body of Christ. Among the lives lost was a teacher, Erin West, whose memory has become a light in the darkness. Her pastor and community members spoke of her as someone who “loved Jesus and others,” a legacy that speaks volumes about how she lived her life.

Even in tragedy, her example prompts us to reflect: What will people say about us? Will our lives tell the story of God’s love and grace? Will we be remembered as individuals who lived with purpose, passion, and an unwavering commitment to Christ?

A Christian’s Legacy is Rooted in Love

The hallmark of a Christian’s life is love. In John 13:35, Jesus told His disciples, “By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.” Love is not just an attribute of the Christian life—it is the foundation.

The teacher from Abundant Life Christian School exemplified this truth. Her life reflected a deep love for Jesus that overflowed into her relationships with others. She didn’t just teach lessons; she lived them, showing kindness, humility, and grace to all who knew her.

Her story reminds us that our lives should be a reflection of Christ. We are called to live in such a way that when people remember us, they see not just who we were but Whom we served.

How Your Choices Shape Your Legacy

The way you live today directly influences how you will be remembered tomorrow. Every decision, no matter how small, shapes your legacy. If you desire to be remembered as someone who loved deeply and lived faithfully, consider how you spend your time and where you place your priorities.

  1. Love Radically: Love isn’t always easy, but it’s always worth it. Whether it’s through acts of service, encouraging words, or simply being present for others, let love be your guiding principle.

  2. Seek God Daily: A life of faith isn’t built in grand gestures but in daily communion with God. Spend time in His Word and in prayer, allowing Him to shape your heart and guide your actions.

  1. Live Generously: Whether through time, resources, or talents, give freely to those in need. Generosity reflects God’s heart and leaves an indelible mark on the lives of others.

  2. Lead by Example: The world is watching how Christians live. Be a light in the darkness, showing patience, humility, and forgiveness even in difficult circumstances.

  1. Share the Gospel Boldly: Don’t shy away from pointing others to Christ. Through your words and actions, let the message of salvation shine brightly in your life.

Living to Be Remembered for Christ

When people remember you, what do you hope they’ll say? Will they talk about your achievements or the way you made them feel loved and valued? More importantly, will they see Jesus in you?

The teacher from Abundant Life Christian School is remembered for her unwavering faith and love for others. Her life wasn’t about accolades but about embodying Christ’s love. As Christians, we are called to pursue a similar path. Our words, actions, and relationships should point others to Jesus, leaving a legacy that glorifies God.
