2 Peter 3:17 You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked.
The Apostle Peter gives us a warning and a command to remain steadfast and not be led away with the error of the wicked as we prepare for Christ's return. The question is, “What is the error of the wicked?” At the start of 2 Peter 3, Apostle Peter reminds us (by a strong sense of urgency) that God’s promise is not slack, and Jesus is sure to come back. Why is Peter reminding us of this? He is reminding us of this because we are in the last days and in these days (just like they were in his time), we have the wicked living “their best life” and many Christians doing the same. They are living like God will not judge the earth or that Jesus will not return. They are living life according to their lust and not in fear of Holy God. It is so bad that it’s nearly impossible to tell the difference between the person who is saved and unsaved. Peter urges us to be stirred up in our minds and remember “the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior” that we will not willfully forget that the Day of the Lord is approaching and sure to come. The error of the wicked is thinking God is slacking on what He has promised (to destroy the world through fire; 2 Pet 3:10) and Christ will not return. No matter if all seems normal, peaceful, and just like any other day…. Christ’s return is imminent, and God’s promise is certain. Let us not be led away with the error of the wicked.
The Apostle Peter reminds us that we can be sure that God will destroy this heaven and earth by calling us to remember that which He did in the days of Noah. Just like in those days, people were “living their best life” – ignoring the warning of the judgement of God. The result, only 8 souls were spared (saved; salvation). Ecclesiastes states, “there is nothing new under the sun.” Humanity is filled with many diverse characteristics, but in all the differences, one inherent flaw seems to pass along, transcending culture, race, etc.…. tendency to ignore what is true and do what we want. Although the promise of God seems afar off (the lie the devil tells us), it will “come as a thief in the night” – Will you be ready? Peter also tells us not to be fooled by what the world is telling us about the coming of the Lord or the Day of the Lord; God is not slacking but is “longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” This should cause us committed Christians to spread the truth of God’s Word and remind them of His return. Unless God is longsuffering none of us would be saved. He was longsuffering in the days of Noah where 8 souls experienced salvation, He is also longsuffering in these last days that we may experience salvation. 2 Peter 3:15, “and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation.”
Avid Christ-followers, patiently wait on the Lord and for His return. Remain steadfast in your commitment and faith knowing that God is not slack concerning His promises. While you are waiting, “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” In other words, don’t believe the hype or what the wicked say (i.e., “God doesn’t exist” or “He isn’t coming back”) – remain firmly planted in what you know to be true as recorded in the Bible concerning these times and while we wait, be patient and get deepen your understanding of the Lord Jesus Christ.
